About Earth Hour
On Saturday, March 28th, 2009 at 8:30 PM, people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour, Earth Hour, to show how by working together we can make a difference in the fight against climate change. The symbolic event is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage individuals, businesses and communities to take action to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. Earth Hour, led by world’s largest and most experienced independent conservation organisation, WWF, aims to reach 1 billion people in 1,000 cities to illustrate the world communities’ support for action on climate change.

Singapore, December 10 2008: 74 cities in 62 countries, including Singapore, have today committed to switch off for WWF’s Earth Hour in 2009. The campaign, which hopes to eventually reach out to more than one billion people in 1,000 cities around the world, asks individuals, businesses and governments to switch off lights for just one hour on Saturday March 28 at 8:30pm to create a platform of support for action on climate change.

The lights out initiative, which began in Sydney in 2007 as a public awareness raising campaign, has grown significantly over the past two years and now has 74 cities ready to flick the switch in 2009.

Getting involved in Earth Hour is easy. Supporters can simply follow a three step process;
1. Sign up for Earth Hour 2009 on http://www.earthhour.org/
2. Switch off your lights for one hour on March 28 at 8.30pm
3. Make a difference by reducing your impact on climate change on an on-going basis
Further ideas for the kind of activities supporters could carry out are to be found on the Earth Hour website http://www.earthhour.org/ some of which include:

*For individuals
· Encourage all you know to participate by posting links and content related to Earth Hour on your blogs, websites and emails
· Host a (beeswax) candle lit dinner party at your home for earth hour
· Review your home and consider the things you could do differently to save energy and help mitigate global warming

*For community, youth and school groups
· Organize your own Earth Hour event, perhaps host an Earth Hour community event lit by (beeswax) candles, organize a movie or music party night
· Use the hour to talk about what you can do every day to save energy
· Post links and content related to Earth Hour on your blogs, websites and emails

For businesses
· Turn off your lights for Earth Hour
· Communicate Earth Hour to your staff, your other offices regionally and globally, your partners, suppliers, your customers, your tenants, post links and content related to Earth Hour on websites and emails
· Provide direct support, i.e. become an Earth Hour Sponsor or second staff to Earth Hour team.
· Develop a long term action plan to cut your CO2 emissions. WWF is working with leading businesses to help them achieve ambitious emissions reduction targets.

For media
· Consider supporting the campaign through your media outlet with editorial or pro-bono advertising
· Consider features timed for appearance in March on the topic of climate change and energy efficiency
· Post links and content related to Earth Hour on websites and emails.
